SCSPMA AWARDS
The association
presents awards to individuals who have excelled in their maintenance vocations
or have made special contributions to the association based on your
recommendations.
We welcome your input and comments!
Director of
Maintenance/Vicar Award – This
award is in memory of Anthony Vicar who was the Director of Maintenance for the
City of New York Department of Hospitals for 35 years. He passed away in 1984.
This award is designed to honor a member who displays commitment to the
profession and contributes to his/her community.
Maintenance
Supervisor of the Year/Everett Jarrell Award
– This award is named for a former member who was the Maintenance Supervisor
from Allendale County Schools who passed away several years ago. This award is
designed for the Supervisor who shows outstanding leadership, works with his/her
employees and Superiors to the betterment of their School District.
Custodian of the
Year/Wilbur McCartha Award – This
award is named for the former Custodial Consultant for the S.C. Department of
Education. It was at the Custodial Workshop in 1981 that Wilbur McCartha
spearheaded the drive to form the SCSPMA. He was one of our charter members.
The criteria for this award is a custodian/day porter who stands out in his/her
job.
Maintenance
Employee/Horace Wall Award –
This award is named for a former member who passed away at the summer conference
in 1985. Horace Wall was a boiler mechanic in Spartanburg District 7. The
criteria for this award is designed to be awarded to a “nuts and bolts” type of
employee, an employee that is in the trenches and is often overlooked.
Cornerstone Award
– This award is given to someone who has displayed constant support for the
Association. The wording on the plaque is very important and is specific as to
why the recipient has been selected.
Person of the Year
Award - Voted on by Officers and
Board of SCSPMA.
President’s Plaque
- This award is given to the
past president for all of their hard work and dedication to the SCSPMA
Association.
Facilities Services
Department of the Year – This
award is to recognize and honor a school district’s maintenance and custodial
services who’s work is in compliance with applicable codes and regulations,
technically appropriate, planned with consideration of total systems effects and
efficiently completed.
Superintendent of the
Year – The Superintendent of the
Year award was created to recognize and honor superintendents in our state for
outstanding leadership in their public schools. The superintendent must be
responsible for the programs of Maintenance and Operations as well as showing
creativity in successfully meeting the needs of students in his or her school
system. The superintendent must demonstrate commitment through consistently
upgrading his or her administrative knowledge and skills along with providing
professional development opportunities for other members of the professional
team while motivating others to achieve.

Facilities
Selection Criteria
1.
Open to all public schools in South Carolina.
2.
The basis for evaluating the applications:
a)
Use of an efficient system to initiate, monitor and document pertinent
aspects of the work requested of and performed by the Facilities Service
Department.
b)
Assistance and support for district-wide effort to ensure that all
construction modification and use of district facilities is technically
appropriate, minimizes life cycle costs and provides for efficient operation.
c)
The selection committee will welcome any information about your district
facilities services area that indicates cleaner buildings, improved maintenance
and any proactive actions taken to eliminate inconvenience to school facility
users.
The Award
1.
The recipient will receive an individual plaque designating the award as
Facilities Services Department of the Year.
2.
A news release will be sent to appropriate media in the recipients
hometown or Statewide.
SCSPMA
Superintendent Selection Criteria
1.
Open to all public school superintendents in South Carolina actively
employed.
2.
The basis for evaluating the applications:
a) Responsible
for the programs of Maintenance and Operations (Facility Services)
b)
Professionalism – The applicant has demonstrated commitment through
consistently upgrading his or her administrative knowledge and skills, providing
professional development opportunities for other members of the professional
team, and motivating others to achieve.
c)
Nominations must be made by an active member of SCSPMA.
d)
Nominees must be from the school system making the nomination.
e)
A biographical sketch, preferably in narrative form and no more than two
pages in length, including the nominee’s achievements that have contributed to
success in their district’s maintenance and operations and other professional
involvement and any other information pictorial, etc…
f)
Leadership for Learning – The applicant has shown creativity in
successfully meeting the needs to the students in his or her school system.

Selection Procedure
1.
A panel of representatives of the SCSPMA Executive Committee.
2.
The basis for selection will be the application and the nominee’s success
in meeting the selection criteria.
3.
The SCSPMA Facilities Services Department of the Year will be named prior
to the annual Summer Conference and presented at the Conference with the
distinctive honor.
